The Wall Street Journal reports that Sarah Palin is having some fun with the English language. She wrote a series of messages to her Twitter followers asking that New Yorkers and Muslims “refudiate” the plans to construct a mosque two blocks away from Ground Zero. The opinion is not surprising, considering the host. However, you might say the word “refudiate” is undercorrect, ingrammatical or missaid. Basically, Palin made up a word.

Perhaps she meant “refute?” Or maybe she was going for “repudiate?” It reminds me of that scene in Tina Fey’s high school comedy Mean Girls. Lindsay Lohan’s character, eager to be popular and flustered in the presence of her crush, responds: “Grool.” Then, embarrassed, explains: “I meant to say cool, and then I started to say great.”

Palin quickly erased the posts and added new ones with proper words like “reject.” In response to media inquiries, she said, “English is a living language. Shakespeare liked to coin new words too. Got to celebrate it!”
